Brief Profile of Prof Philip Okinda Owuor, PhD, FAAS, FKNAS

Prof Philip Okinda Owuor is a Professor of Chemistry at Maseno University, Kenya. He holds B.Sc. (Chemistry) from University of Nairobi, Kenya; MSC (Chemistry) and PhD (Organic Chemistry) from Case Western Reserve University, USA. Upon obtaining his PhD he worked briefly as a chemistry lecturer at the University of Nairobi, before joining the Tea Research Foundation of Kenya, where he worked for 22 years as researcher rising through the ranks Senior Principal Research Officer/Deputy Director of Research. During that period he initiated and was principal investigator of major research projects on the understanding the basis of tea quality and he developed several remarkable technologies for the improvement of black tea quality/processing and agronomic procedures for management of field tea nutrients. The research led to his being awarded the “1986 Third World Academy of Science Award” administered by The Kenya National Academy of Sciences and Arts; and “The 1995 Tea Research Foundation of Kenya Merit Award”, both awards being for the outstanding contributions to the understanding of the chemistry of tea and tea manufacture. He has also been inducted into the prestigious fellowships of the African Academy of Sciences and the Kenya National Academy of Sciences. He left tea industry to join Maseno University where he is a Professor of Chemistry and has been Dean/Director of the School of Graduate Studies. Despite joining the University he has continued researching and consulting on tea matters. Prof. Owuor has published over 300 papers in various international and national journals and presented over 100 papers at various international conferences and symposia, mostly on tea science. At present he is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Tea Journal and also a member of several professional societies including the Africa Academy of Sciences; Kenya National Academy of Sciences; International Society of Tea Science; New York Academy of Sciences; American Chemical Society; Natural Products Research Network for Eastern and Central Africa; and Kenya Chemical Society. He was a founder member of the Scientific Advisory Panel of the Board of Directors of the Tea Research Institute of Tanzania and a member of Board of Management of the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute. Prof Owuor led the Kenya Government delegations to several ISO Standards for Tea, ISO TC/34 SC 8 Tea meetings.
