Ziyad Mohamed
Dr. M T Ziyad Mohamed / Tea Technologist

A Tea Technologist by profession, holds a Ph D in Biotechnology form University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, and a B Sc (Chemistry Hons) from University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. He counts more than 35 years experience in research and extension on tea processing and related aspects.

His major research contributions are,

  • – the introduction of variable speed drives for withering fans,
    – introducing a computer model for selection of best rolling program in orthodox manufacture,
    – development of plucking shear for selective harvesting – which won an International Gold Medal 1999
    – introducing a rapid method for moisture determination using domestic model microwave oven
    – a simple chemical method for determination of optimum fermentation time in black tea manufacture

He served the Tea Research Institute (TRI) of Sri Lanka for 23 years, of which, 3 years as its Director. He also served CIC Tea Advisory Services (Pvt) Ltd., and Sunhill Tea Factory (Pvt)., Ltd Sri Lanka as Director and CEO repsectively.

He also worked as a Consultant to the World Bank on the project “Sri Lanka Estate Sector Reform & Modernization – 2016”. He served as a member of the ISO Technical Committee on Tea for nearly 10 years. He has also carried out consultancies in Rwanda, Kenya and India on tea processing and value addition.

He works as free a lance consultant for many Regional Plantation Companies, Tea Exporters and Tea Brokers in Sri Lanka.

He was a Guest Speaker at 2nd Africa International Tea Convention and Exhibition, Kigali, Rwanda in 2013 and also 2nd Africa Tea Science Symposium and Exhibition, Nyeri, Kenya in 2018.
